Turbine developed by Japanese engineers will generate electricity from sea waves
As we know ‘sea’ is a great source of energy and research are trying to harvest that clean energy in an efficient way. Currently, a team of Japanese researchers from the ‘Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology’ (OIST), has come up with special technology. To not only generate electricity from sea waves but also help protect coastlines.
We know Star-shaped concrete structure Known as Tetrapods are used to protect coastlines from incoming waves and prevent erosion.
This team of OIST plans to set up energy harvesting turbines near Tetrapods. This will not only harvest the wave energy but also dissipate it, working with tetrapods to reduce the impact on coastlines.
The turbine has 5 flexible blades. To protect the turbines during rough swells or extreme events like typhoons, the team took a cue from dolphin fins and made the blades flexible so they release stress.
There will be safe for marine life with blades be carefully calibrated that any animal caught in this can escape unharmed. The supporting structure is also designed to bend under pressure, like the stems of flowers. It is supported by marine cables inside the seabed.
Inside, the turbine has a magnetic electric generator, which converts the moving energy of the turbine into electricity. The produced electricity is sent back to shore via marine cables to feed into the power grids.
Though the researchers have not given any data about how much electricity will be generated by a single turbine, but roughly they said, using turbines on just one per cent of Japan’s coastline can generate 10 gigawatts of energy which is equivalent to about 10 nuclear power plants apart from tetrapods turbines can also hardness electricity near Coral leaves.
